Britain’s BAE Systems, the world’s fourth biggest arms company, has paid over £25 million (US$49.5 mn.) to a company whose majority Zimbabwean shareholder is a long-time business ally of President Robert Mugabe’s regime. The multiple investigations into BAE’s role in the affair, which appear to be nearing conclusion, are likely to have serious political repercussions in Britain and South Africa.

L’Afrique révise les contrats miniers

« Les conditions économiques ont changé, écrit l’économiste zambien John Lungu, le prix du cuivre a considérablement augmenté, obligeant la société civile et les partis politiques zambiens de l’opposition à accroître la pression sur le gouvernement pour qu’il renégocie les accords de développement (1). » Lors des élections de novembre 2006 en Zambie (2e exportateur mondial de cuivre, 3e exportateur de cobalt), l’opposition exigeait ainsi « des taxes plus élevées sur les minerais et moins d’impôts pour les mineurs ». Partout sur le continent, le partage des bénéfices d’un secteur minier dynamisé par la hausse des cours des matières premières (2) fait l’objet de contestations. Ainsi, début 2007, une grève générale contre l’incurie du président Lansana Conté a paralysé la Guinée (1er producteur mondial de bauxite).
