Semafo, une minière canadienne au Niger

La minière canadienne Semafo qui est basée à Montréal exploite l’or au Niger.

Sur le site web de la compagnie on peu y lire que la compagnie exploite trois mines d’or : une au Burkina Faso, en Guinée et au Niger. Semafo s’est engagée à « agir consciencieusement afin de devenir un acteur de premier plan dans la région ou elle exerce ses activités » mais sa «priorité stratégique consiste à maximiser la valeur pour ses actionnaires par la gestion efficace de ses actifs… »

Qu’en est-il vraiment?

He specializes in international security forecasting for African conflicts, especially Somalia. He is also a member of Grilla, Group for Research and Initiative for the Liberation of Africa.

This 15 minute interview is followed by analysis from Amandla’s Doug Miller on recent news on HIV-AIDS policies in Africa. The struggle to bring adequate treatment, prevention and curative methods to bear on the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa has been seriously jeopardised by the G8 countries cutbacks in this year’s contributions to the global fund and the reluctance of multinational drug manufacturers like Johnson and Johnson to loosen their profitable grip on patents that could allow the production of life-saving cheap generic drugs. In the words of Stephen Lewis, such callous indifference to the lives of Africans is essentially murder.

La population congolaise lutte depuis longtemps pour la fin de la corruption et le pillage des ressources. Les dernières élections ne répondront pas aux attentes.

Le 28 novembre dernier ont eu lieu les élections présidentielles et législatives en République démocratique du Congo (RDC). Ce rendez-vous électoral est le deuxième dans l’histoire de ce géant africain, indépendant depuis 1960. Près de 32 millions d’électeurs étaient attendus pour ce scrutin dans quelque 64 000 bureaux de vote. Pour les législatives, prévues le jour même, 500 sièges étaient disputés par 18 334 candidats en lice. Des chiffres énormes. Lors de ces élections, l’Eglise catholique a joué un rôle important : la conférence épiscopale nationale du Congo s’y est engagée à déployer, de concert avec les autres confessions religieuses et le Centre Carter (ONG étasunienne), une mission d’observation de 30 000 observateurs. La conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada a, de ce fait, répondu à l’appel de sa consœur congolaise en envoyant une délégation composée de 5 personnes, organisée par l’organisme Développement et paix et au sein de laquelle a fait partie le secteur Vivre ensemble du Centre justice et foi que j’ai représenté.

CIDA teams up with NGOs to do development work at mine sites

MONTREAL—As excavators, heavy haulers and chemical treatment plants dig made-in-Canada mines around the world, Ottawa has taken new steps to ease growing criticism of Canada’s extractive sector.

The Harper government recently announced a publicly funded agreement between three of Canada’s mining giants and three of Canada’s leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The agreement, which marks a significant shift in how mining and politics mix, elicited little more than a yawn from the media. But a closer look reveals this partnership is transforming Canada’s aid landscape—with disturbing implications.

“The Canadian government is using aid to support the expansion of Canadian mining…[and] to determine development paths inside countries according to the logic of mining companies,” Yao Graham of Third World Network Africa, a research and advocacy organization based in Ghana, told The Dominion. Graham has seen many communities in Africa ravaged by the exploitative labour practices and lax environmental practices that often accompany mining megaprojects.

Land grabs: an interview with the Oakland Institute

Multinational corporations are buying enormous tracts of land in Africa to the detriment of local communities. These land grabs puts countries on the path to increased food insecurity, environmental degradation, increased reliance on aid and marginalisation of farming and pastoralist communities. This has resulted in the sale of enormous portions of land throughout Africa. In 2009 alone, nearly 60 million hectares of land were purchased or leased throughout the continent for the production and export of food, cut flowers and agrofuel crops. Recently the Oakland Institute has published several documents on these land grabs and their consequences, based on extensive research. The Oakland Institute is a is an independent policy think tank, bringing fresh ideas and bold action to the most pressing social, economic, and environmental issues of our time. Joining us on the line is Frederic Mousseau, policy director at the Oakland institute where he coordinates Understanding Land Investment Deals in Africa project.

In the next few minutes, I’m going to be closing my computer and leaving the International Conference Centre in Durban, with no plans of ever coming back. The negotiations won’t officially be over, I won’t know if there is an agrement on a second phase of the Kyoto Protocol, I won’t know if governments have committed to “operationalizing the GCF under the stweardhsip of the GEF.”

And while all these things will have an impact on climate change, global warming, and the crises that have begun and will only intensify if we allow average global temperatures to rise more than 2 degrees Celcius, at the end of the day it will probably not matter.
