Émission Amandla du 14 février/ Amandla Radio show from Feb.14 th

Voici quelques sujets qui ont été abordés dans l’émission du 14 février dernier d’Amandla.

1. La situation en Guinée-Conakry. Elle avait été abordée dans une émission précédente. On sait que les syndicats ont initié un mouvement de grève générale et ont exigé du Président Lansana Conté qu’il applique des réformes économiques et politiques afin de “remettre la Guinée sur ses pieds”. Cette semaine, les espoirs de changements s’amenuisent avec le décret présidentiel interdisant toute circulation de personnes civiles entre 6h00 a.m. et 4h00 p.m. Ce décret fait suite à un mouvement populaire qui aura échappé au contrôle des syndicats qui avait appelé à un relancement de la grève. L’origine de cet appel était la nomination du nouveau premier ministre: Eugène Camara, considéré comme trop proche du pouvoir. Depuis un mois, on peut compter les morts à plus de 100. Certains commentaires de l’organisation “Médecin sans Frontière” ont été mentionné à l’émission et concernaient les effets désastreux du décret sur l’aide que l’organisme prodigue à 1200 patients atteints du VIH/SIDA et qui doivent se déplacer pour se procurer leurs médicaments. Pour compliquer l’affaire, une dissension au sein de l’armée est apparue. Un groupe de jeunes militaires critique Conté d’avoir fait appels à des troupes de Guinée-Bissau et du Libéria pour contrôler les émeutes. Il semble que les mutins auraient été contrôlés mais la situation demeure critique dans l’ensemble du pays. Un sujet que l’émission Amandla tiendra à réaborder dans un futur proche…
2. Création de l’AFRICOM. Georges Bush a annoncé la création d’un nouveau centre de commandement stratégique de l’armée américaine pour le contient africain. Il va initier une nouvelle ère de paix, de coopération et de développement économique et de la démocratie sur le continent africain selon ses dires. Ce qui devait arriver arrive donc. Il y a à peine un mois, on annonçait à l’émission que des auteurs comme Peter Pham (un autre lien ici), proposaient fortement la mise sur pied d’un tel centre de commandement. Officiellement, les centres de commandement ont pour but d’offrir un contrôle effectif des forces américaines en temps de guerre et de paix. Ils permettent aussi une meilleure coopération militaire entre les États-Unis et leurs alliés. Ainsi, l’AFRICOM accentuera la coopération militaire avec les États africains. Il faudra par contre s’attendre à un resserrement des liens économiques avec les États-Unis car, après la coopération militaire, c’est la coopération économique qui suit. Or, il faut savoir que l’Afrique fournit près du quart de l’approvisionnement en pétrole américain et la présence de la Chine sur le continent, avec ses besoins en pétrole qui vont en augmentant inquiète Washington. On comprend que le rôle à long terme de l’AFRICOM ne se cantonnera pas uniquement à la chasse aux terroristes et aux islamistes radicaux dans la Corne de l’Afrique, dans le Sahara ou au Soudan…
3. Le chocolat de St-Valentin. Un livre écrit par la journaliste canadienne Carol Off: “Bitter Chocolate”, nous décrit comment l’industrie mondiale du chocolat, qui implique des États africains comme le Côte d’Ivoire et le Ghana, est basée sur l’exploitation d’une main d’oeuvre infantile que l’on tue à l’ouvrage. Le comble est que les intermédiaires qui distribuent le cacao en Amérique du Nord affirment ne pas savoir d’où il provient. Une façon comme une autre de fermer les yeux sur un commerce très florisant en cette période de St-Valentin.

Here are the subjects that were talked about on the last Amandla show on February 14th.

1. Follow up on the Guinea situation (links lead to french sites). On a previous show, we talked about the Worker Unions who started a general strike and asked general Lansana Conté to put in place economic and political reforms in order to put the country “back on it’s feet”. This week, hopes are fading because of a presidential decree forbidding all displacements between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. This decree is the result of uprisings that took place following the call from the Unions to start the strike again. The events went out of control and the Unions couldn’t control the manifestations. The origin of such a call was the nomination of Eugene Camara as the new prime minister and considered too close to Conté. Within the last month we can say there’s been over 100 dead. Comments from “Médecin sans Frontières” were mentionned in the show. They were regarding the desastrous effects of the decree on the 1200 AIDS patients they treat and that need to make displacements on order to have acces to their medication. To make the situation more complicated, a dissension within the army occured. A young faction of the military criticized Conté who asked for foreign troups from Guinea-Bissau and Liberia to to deal with the protesters. It seems the situation within the army is now under control. The events in Guinea will be on futur Amandla shows.
2. AFRICOM. The U.S. president George Bush announced the creation of a new strategic command center for the Armed Forces on the African continent. According to him, it would initiate a new era of peace, cooperation, economic development and democracy on the continent. A previous Amandla show mentionned about the soon-to-come AFRICOM, and we’re not surprised today. Authors like Peter Phamother link), asked for the creation of such a command center. Officially, the role of the Command Centers is to supervise the activities of the U.S. Armed forces personnel wether there is war or peace. They also enable a better military coordination between the U.S.A. and their allies. The AFRICOM will stress the cooperation with the African States. But, we should expect stronger economic ties because, after the military cooperation, comes the economic one. And it is important to know that Africa contributes to almost a quarter of the U.S. oil imports. The presence of China with it’s own needs in raw materials and energy will also stir up a scramble for the continent. We then understand that the long term role of the AFRICOM will not be limitated to the hunt for terrorists or radical islamists in the Horn of Africa, in the Sahara or in Sudan…
3. Valentine’s day chocolate. A book written by the canadian journalist Carol Off: “Bitter Chocolate” describes how the world chocolate industry, which involves African states like Ivory Coast and Ghana, is based on the exploitation of child labor. The worse are the companies who disributes the cocoa in North America. They say they don’t know were it comes from; an other way of closing their eyes on a business that is pretty flourishing on Valentin’s day period.
